The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like standard biological terror, but within Together lies a deep meditation about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when Tim and Millie transition from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He fears the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
