Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. “A father frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events result in approximately US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
