EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
